Engaging Learners in Meaningful Discussion In-Person

Classroom discussion are a powerful strategy by which to  challenge learner assumptions, engage with divergent views,  problem-solve and co-create knowledge and understandings.  Classroom discussion can take many forms from class debates to small group problem-solving to Socratic seminars. This session offers practical strategies for engaging students in meaningful class discussions, including:  clearly defining discussion's purpose, establishing an expectation of mutual respect and dignity where all contributions are valued, selecting the style of discussion and structuring it accordingly,  clearly defining your role as facilitator and the role of the learner, asking powerful question and encouraging active listening. NOTE: This is an in-person session. It will be focused on in-class, face-to-face teaching.
