Personalized Land Acknowledgement In-Person
In this session, we will discuss the Northern Health Libraries Association (NAHLA) initiative for personalized land acknowledgments. Land acknowledgments have become a more common practice to recognize the Indigenous nations whose land a meeting, class, or event takes place on. However, some scholars have criticized this practice as being only performative, and not one that is rooted in substantive action or justice (Stewart-Ambo & Yang, 2021; Wark, 2021; Tuck & Yang, 2012).
NAHLA has put together resources for personalizing a land acknowledgment that is focused on personal story, intention, implication, gratitude, and action. This approach works to move us past the act of recognition, and towards active work towards more just futures.
The event will be co-facilitated by representatives from kihêw waciston, CTL, and the Faculty of Nursing.
