Teaching Philosophy Statements In-Person

Teaching philosophies are an important part of faculty members’ applications for tenure-track positions, tenure, and promotion, providing a way for faculty to clearly and deliberately communicate the beliefs and practices that distinguish and guide their teaching. Although overwhelming, the process of preparing a philosophy statement provides a valuable opportunity for reflection, professional development, growth, and ongoing improvement related to teaching and learning practices. This session’s goal is to offer guidance that will simplify this process and help you make the most out of it.


This extended workshop will provide faculty with an opportunity to explore various educational philosophies and learning theories and to identify those that they align with most closely. Out of this process, faculty will start to develop the basis of their teaching philosophy—a few succinct statements that represent their core beliefs about teaching. Then, we’ll consider how the teaching philosophy and reflections on teaching can work together to constitute a strong, clearly presented teaching dossier. 


Faculty at any stage of the philosophy preparation process are welcome to join this session, whether they are still contemplating their first draft or would like ideas to help them revise an existing teaching philosophy.


NOTE: A minimum of 5 participants is required. In the case of low enrollment, the session will be rescheduled in September.
