Writing Research Proposals for Master's Scholarships In-Person
This workshop supports students who are planning to attend graduate school and apply for master's or postgraduate-level scholarships. It focuses in particular on the Canada Graduate Scholarship-Master's Program, which awards prestegious $27,000 awards (as of the 2024 budget increase) to successful applicants. Room 7-139.
Learning Objectives: Students will leave the presentation with increased awareness of the purposes and discourse features of academic grant proposals, enabling them to craft persuasive proposals of their own.
Topics Covered in the Session:
- Introduction to the persuasive, promotional, promissory, and problem-solving purposes of academic grant proposals.
- An exploration of the rhetorical concept of the audience, specifically multidisciplinary committees.
- Examination of genre features, including the literature review, research question, methodology, and discussion of significance.
- Discussion on the concept of negotiating one's positionality and professional identity.
- Brief insights into the IMRaD and CARS models of situating research.
Depending on time constraints, students may be able to engage in writing exercises and peer reviews of each other's work. To maximize participation, it's recommended to bring a rough draft of your research proposal.
