The Exam Wrapper: An activity for supporting metacognition [online] In-Person
Do you find your students to be underprepared for university and without basic study skills? Study and learning skills (including problem-solving, building a plan, and adjusting that approach with received feedback) are often referred to as metacognitive skills - they are crucial for student success. While you may not have time to help students learn the basics, there are some small things you can do in your classroom to support them in reflecting on how they study, and what else they could try.
One solution is the exam wrapper. In this session, we will look at evidence-based strategies for building self-reflection opportunities into standard assessments like the exam. The exam wrapper, a short form that students complete upon receiving a graded exam or assignment, offers students the opportunity to reflect upon, compare, and adjust how they prepare/study. The exam wrapper can be especially useful for students preparing to take qualifying or board examinations.
