Cultural Safety as a Framework for Practice In-Person
Cultural safety is an approach to practice (teaching, nursing, social work etc.) that aims to ensure that individuals feel respected, valued, and free from discrimination in environments where cultural differences exist. Originally developed in Indigenous health care in New Zealand by Māori nurse Irihapeti Ramsden, the concept has expanded into education, social services, and other fields because of its practical application where cultural differences are apparent. Cultural safety goes beyond cultural awareness and competence by focusing on power dynamics, systemic inequities, and the lived experiences of marginalized groups. In this session, Dr. Bisi Oyelana, Department of Nursing Foundations and Science, will present on what constitutes cultural safety, informed by research and practice.
