Culturally Responsive Teaching and Culturally Relevant Pedagogy In-Person

Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) (Geneva Gay) is an educational approach that acknowledges, values, and incorporates students’ cultural backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives into the learning process. It is rooted in the belief that students learn best when their cultural identities are affirmed and integrated into classroom practices.

Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (CRP) is an educational framework developed by Gloria Ladson-Billings in the 1990s. It is designed to empower students by incorporating their cultural backgrounds into the learning experience while promoting academic excellence, cultural competence, and critical consciousness.

We will consider the overlaps and differences and discuss how these two approaches may inform your teaching practice. If you are thinking about ways to adapt to diversity and create inclusive classroom experiences, this deep dive into these related but different approaches may help you narrow the focus that suits your learning objectives and teaching practice.
