Growing Our Playfulness In-Person
I consider myself to be a serious person and being serious has yielded benefits in my life. For instance, I have experienced academic and professional success and I have gained respect from the people around me.
While I like being serious and it feels quite comfortable by now, I’ve been feeling a pull in the last couple of years to become more playful. Not that I intend to ever drop all my seriousness, but more so that I’d like to expand my range and be comfortable being both serious and playful as the context allows.
Therefore, I’ve decided to stretch myself and offer a workshop full of games and play. The two rules I’ve established for myself are that every activity in the session must:
- Be fun; and
- Have a clear learning goal.
And I am inviting you to join me on the journey! By the end of this session, it is expected that participants and facilitator will be able to:
- Smile/laugh three times or more.
- Leave the room more relaxed than we entered.
- List two or more fun activities and games that can be used in class.
- Describe how playfulness can enhance learning.
- Seriously consider incorporating one fun activity in the courses we teach.
