ED Talks: Developing Scientific Reasoning through Structured Socratic Seminars (Dr. Serhiy Buryak) (Online Session) In-Person

Presented by: Dr. Serhiy Buryak, Assistant Professor, Department of Physical Sciences

This session examines a structured Socratic seminar model used in a 4th year Earth Science course (Cold Regions Geoscience).

Students in upper and intermediate-level science courses are often expected to evaluate scientific literature, integrate multiple lines of evidence, and communicate interpretations that acknowledge uncertainty. These skills can be difficult to develop through lecture and conventional reading assignments alone.

The session will discuss the relationship between preparation and participation, approaches to encouraging equitable contribution, methods for keeping discussion grounded in evidence, and the integration of seminars with research writing and oral assessment. The approach offers a transferable framework for helping students progress from summarizing scholarly sources to participating in collaborative, evidence-based disciplinary reasoning.
