Navigating Difficult Teaching and Learning Moments In-Person

This session invites educators to describe and analyze difficult teaching and learning moments. We will look at examples of difficult teaching and learning moments and strategies to manage the classroom atmosphere.

What might be considered a difficult teaching and learning moment?

  • Overtly difficult learning: content that is emotionally heavy and uncomfortable, like war, racism, sexism.
  • Challenging material: course content with threshold concepts or well-known difficult to grasp concepts
  • Unpredictable events: sharp differences of perspectives on course concepts; cognitive dissonance that is unexpected; personal challenges that spill into the learning; cultural differences; differences in understanding of institutional requirements that may appear as barriers to learning.

We might not always be able to predict and anticipate when these moments appear, but we can be prepared with ethical, professional responses that support the challenges of difficult learning contexts. These strategies are intended to support both instructors and students in navigating difficult learning.
